CONTEXT
With the largest number of masterpieces and conservators of artistic heritage in the world, Florence offers the best opportunities to acquire and perfect the skills and knowledge for the protection of cultural heritage.
For 35 years, our Institute has opened its laboratories in July, August and September to students from all over the world who are interested in joining practical courses run by the same teachers as the three-year academic courses. And now, from 2024 onwards we are offering short introductory courses throughout the year.
The introductory course in Restoration of Paper and Print Materials gives participants the opportunity to work on paper and print materials provided by local antique dealers and museums to identify problems and deterioration and carry out appropriate restoration work.
SCHEDULE
Monday 31 August: 9.00 to 13.00 / 14.00 to 18.00
Tuesday 1 September: 9.00 to 13.00
Wednesday 2 September: 9.00 to 13.00 / 14.00 to 18.00
Thursday 3 September: 9.00 to 13.00 / 14.00 to 18.00
Friday 4 September: 9.00 to 13.00
for a total of 32 hours.
The course will be held in the restoration laboratories in Via dei Michelozzi 2.
ADMISSIONS
The course is open to all applicants, prior experience in restoration is not necessary.
The course is held in English. Good working knowledge of the language is required.
SPECIAL OFFERS

QUALIFICATION
PROGRAM
Course Program
- Preliminary operations for restoration,
- Restoration records, and evaluation of intervention methods.
- Dry operations: the importance of mechanical cleaning, degumming with various types of sponges and mechanical cleaning using brushes, erasers, scalpels, and micro vacuum cleaners.
- Solubility tests for colors and inks, pH measurement and assessment of values.
- The various types of adhesives used in restoration, reparation and comparison.
- Wet cleaning: immersion washing, deacidification, drying, relining or consolidation.
- Paper restoration: various techniques for consolidation, tear repairs, gap reconstruction (thinning and imprinting), partial or total layering, and paper pulp. Trimming and flattening of the supports.
